The Head of Tools and Engineering within the Advanced Science Group of the Pfizer Innovation Research (PfIRe) Laboratory will be responsible for the elaboration of the technology required for the conduct of digital precision medicine experiments. This position requires an engaged problem-solver experienced in the isolation and quantitative measurement of biological signals through the application of existing technology or, when necessary, through the validation of novel devices capable of dynamical monitoring and capture of human data in the laboratory, clinic or in ecologically relevant settings. This role requires supervision of a small group of biomedical scientists and programmers and includes positions for 2-3 post-doctoral fellows who will support PfIRe lab projects in both the Digital Innovation and Advanced Science groups. The Engineering group is one of four interacting units in the Advanced Sciences Group with the remaining three being Biology, Data Analysis, Modeling and Visualization (DAMV), and Computer Science and Technology. The Engineering Head will work with the heads of each Advanced Science unit to build a unique 21st century industrial laboratory focused on identifying, developing and delivering industrialized solutions across the Pfizer enterprise. As part of the broader PfIRe lab, the Advance Sciences Group will deliver both fit-for-purpose solutions at the request of Pfizer asset and enterprise teams while also developing platform technologies based on internal and external projections of future therapeutic and organizational needs. The mission of the PfIRe Lab is to solve key business problems using a focus on dynamical measures, advanced-STEM platforms and a collaborative network of external stakeholders, regulators and internal enterprise-wide colleagues to support a digital therapeutic pipeline. To contribute to this effort, the Head of the Engineering group must be a scientist with the bandwidth and depth to look into the future while simultaneously responding to the current demands of the organization. A critical capability all scientific leaders in the PfIRe lab is the ability to interact with and represent Pfizer to the local Boston-Cambridge medical-academic and technical community. These individuals will be expected to lead scientific coalitions and collaborations that result from alliances and ventures brought to the PfIRe Lab by the Digital Collaboration or Digital Innovation Projects teams. The Head of Tools and Engineering must be a credible partner capable of leveraging Pfizer's relationships with industry and government (other Pharma, IBM, Intel, Google, DARPA, NIH, and international partners, etc).
Reports to Head of the Advanced Science Group in the Pfizer Innovation Research (PfIRe) Lab. *Responsible for developing and directing a dynamic engineering team within the Advanced Science Group.Responsible for delivering the tools, instruments and methodology needed by other components of the Advanced Science and PfIRe Labs for collecting the dynamical biomedical measurements required to support the development of a sustainable digital therapeutic pipeline of programs.Provide leadership and direction within the Advanced Science Group and the PfIRe Labs in the development and application of new technology platforms to transform clinical development and patients care. *Provide appropriate engineering resources to PfIRe project teams. *Maintain cutting edge knowledge of developments in physiological and clinical measurement; be aware of major advances and emerging trends; *Ensures that PfIRe Lab scientists have access to all relevant technology within the remits described. Use internal and external partnerships to achieve this.Builds connectivity to relevant elements of the local Boston-Cambridge medical-academic and technical community as well other appropriate industrials and governmental groups.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Education: PhD (or M.D.) in a relevant branch of medical science or engineering. *A senior scientist with more than 10 years in biomedical or engineering laboratory research with demonstrable experience in the application of technology to study physiological processes underlying human health and disease. *Demonstrated understanding of biological systems and medicine. Thinks as a problem solver, inventive, hands-on, scientist adept at phrasing questions and research programs in system science terms. Demonstrated ability to enable computational scientists, bio-mathematicians and engineers to adapt technical and mathematical tools to advance projects and programs in the portfolio.Experience in translating physiological measurements from pre-clinical models and conversely success in identifying clinical signals that impact pre-clinical development in drug discovery.Proven track record in scientific and engineering discovery (patents, publication and/or entrepreneurial innovation and success in software or devices). *Experienced at directing a successful and productive research team including scientists, engineers, physicians, or computer scientists at varying levels of training and experience. TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:Quantitative skills and training in medicine, pharmacology, physical chemistry, physics, or engineering.Programming experience *Excellent organizational, analytical, strategic, interpersonal, written and oral skills. *Self-motivated and flexible with the ability to work effectively in a dynamic, problem-solving environment *Demonstrated strength in influencing and negotiation skills and ability to communicate effectively at all stages of the discovery pipeline. *Ability to lead and deliver high performance in a fluid interdisciplinary team and matrixed organization, as well as adapt to a dynamic environment.Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain networks and influence key internal and external decision makers, both in a matrix environment and with direct reports.
