To provide veterinary ophthalmic expertise in all species as it is applied to preclinical drug safety studies. As the ophthalmic veterinarian for Pfizer Worldwide Research &; Development, this position works cooperatively with Study Directors, Study Toxicologists, and the in vivo staff to provide appropriate, protocol-driven ophthalmic evaluations and as required, written reports. In addition, this position provides veterinary support in Comparative Medicine by delivering high quality clinical veterinary medicine. Responsibilities include provision of exemplary veterinary care and fulfilling the key regulatory responsibilities of the Good Laboratory Practice regulations, USDA regulations, AAALAC International guidelines and applicable local regulations. Ophthalmic and veterinary support will be expected at other Pfizer sites as needed.

  1. Assume full responsibility for the in vivo ophthalmic program as required for appropriate Drug Safety evaluation of test articles. The program includes scheduling, conduct of ophthalmic examinations appropriate to the species, interpretation and discussion of findings, and provision of a written report for each study. Indirect ophthalmoscopy, slit lamp biomicroscopy, intraocular pressure measurement, and other techniques as stated in the protocol are required procedures. Training for all aspects of the program will be provided internally and externally.

  2. Provide high quality veterinary care to diverse species of research animals in support of Pfizer's portfolio.

  3. Review and consult on research animal proposals submitted for IACUC review.

  4. Serve on a rotational basis to provide veterinary care coverage on weekends and holidays.

  5. Interact with in vivo scientists to understand their research needs, engaging them in a flexible and constructive manner to address matters of ethical review with a focus on 3Rs, humane endpoints and adverse effects. Support the Attending Veterinarian to maintain compliance and to provide advice on regulatory animal health matters.

  6. Actively participate on or lead Comparative Medicine teams.

Educational Background:

DVM/VMD; licensed to practice in the US or equivalent required

Board eligibility for ACLAM or other, relevant veterinary specialty e.g. ophthalmology, internal medicine, is preferred

Work Experience:

• Must possess a keen interest in veterinary ophthalmology, especially in laboratory animals, and preferably has some experience in performing ophthalmic examinations.

• Laboratory animal medicine experience or experience in veterinary ophthalmic research preferred.

• Must possess clear understanding of regulations guidance (e.g. USDA, GLP) and AAALAC accreditation standards related to the use of animals in research, teaching, and testing.

• In general, a colleague at this level will have a 3-5 years of experience

All colleagues should have functional knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook, calendar management and Internet Explorer. Colleagues should be able to use on line systems such as time tracking and document management. (e.g. SharePoint, Activity Tracker) Knowledge and use of other systems based upon job function may be required: Experience with analysis software/validated data capture systems. (e.g. Biobook)

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Work comfortably with multiple species of laboratory animals

  2. Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required by SOP.

  3. Have manual dexterity required to achieve proficiency in basic ophthalmic

examination procedures.

  1. Be able to sit or stand in one place for long periods while performing ophthalmic examinations.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

  1. Participate in weekend and holiday on-call schedule

  2. Travel to other Comparative Medicine sites for veterinary or ophthalmology support
