Pfizer Vendor Operations Lead in Groton, Connecticut

The Vendor Operations Lead will be Pfizer' s expert on external preferred provider clinical trial execution resourcing algorithms, processes and systems as well as be accountable for providing transparency into preferred provider resourcing assumptions and estimates to various Pfizer internal stakeholders. This role also serves as a key SME for the development, maintenance, and enhancement of Pfizer's Clinical Outsourcing Study Template (COST) tool, which is a global application, leveraged by multiple stakeholders across GPD and Business Unit stakeholders within which all new study Request for Proposal bids are initiated. The individual will become an expert on the operational components and competitiveness of the preferred provider study bids as well as drive key operational metrics critical to measuring operational effectiveness. This position will be responsible for developing and presenting critical analyses (some independently derived and others in response to specific requests) pertaining to Clinical Study Work Orders, Change Orders, Resource forecasts, Resource reports, metrics and overall cost competitiveness of CRO bids/estimates.

Key job responsibilities include:

  • Independently interprets internal/external business challenges and applies technical interpretation to meet business needs as internal business models/sourcing strategies change and appropriately evaluates impacts to existing algorithm structures

  • Is an advanced technical expert on developing, monitoring and providing recommended changes to external provider resourcing algorithms, as well as corresponding systems and business processes

  • Applies advanced business knowledge of resourcing algorithms, cost/budget estimates, savings opportunities and affiliated assumptions in response to ad hoc requests from Executive Management within the Operations Center of Excellence (COE), Clinical Development and Operations or other Pfizer stakeholders.

  • Applies advanced technical expertise and business knowledge in verifying and challenging preferred provider resourcing estimates and assumptions at study/asset level where appropriate with internal or external stakeholders.

  • Leads/Co-Leads key analytics that deepen the understanding of resourcing algorithms, interprets analytical data and provides recommendations that will improve/enhance algorithms and key enabling business systems related to Preferred Provider costs within RAPID, a Planisware tool that is pivotal in driving BU Op Planning and portfolio prioritization decisions.

  • Key SME in educating Pfizer Clinical Development Operations (e.g. Study or Asset Management), Sourcing Operations or other Pfizer stakeholders on resourcing algorithms, assumptions and potential modeling impact of change order assumptions, early study termination impacts on resource consumption, analyzing variances from RAPID estimates vs RFP's from CRO's.

  • Educate key stakeholders on methodology, estimating assumptions, etc. for direct forecasts

  • Independently interprets internal/external business challenges and applies technical interpretation to meet business needs as they relate to COST design and functionality; applies advanced technical knowledge of COST system design and comprehensive knowledge of Sourcing Operations business processes to identify COST design and functionality inefficiencies, propose solutions and validate system enhancements.

  • Lead/Co-Lead continuous improvement of vendor algorithms for forecasting direct clinical trial costs in partnership with appropriate stakeholders and preferred provider

  • Leverage COST data to enhance algorithms; provide analysis and recommendations to refine the RAPID algorithms for the direct fees portion of the tool based on the various sourcing models

  • Deliver requisite support services to Clinical Trial Cost Management (CTCM), Sourcing Ops functions and study teams when requested

  • Reporting and analysis of direct demand forecast including necessary data derived from FSP quarterly Resource Demand Plan updates to be utilized by CTCM Cost Database

  • Ad-hoc support for COST related activities including independently derived metrics to support the business that measures efficiencies and cost savings



Bachelor's Degree required. Advanced academic qualification or degree (e.g., MS or MBA) is preferred.

Prior Experience/Attributes Preferred

  • Minimum of 10 years relevant work experience.

  • Advanced knowledge/understanding of Pfizer clinical trial operational processes, supporting business systems and tools as well as relevant data.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience using project & resource management systems, cost estimating tools, business spreadsheets and reporting applications (e.g., COST, Microsoft Excel, Business Objects, Spotfire, etc.).

  • Able to make independent decisions that require developing innovative options to resolve complex problems using rigorous logic and methods resulting in effective solutions.

  • Uses a variety of communication tools and techniques to present complex ideas and is able to anticipate potential questions, objections and influences others. Ability to comfortably present to and interface with all levels of management across all Pfizer business functional areas.

  • Able to work independently in ambiguous situations and determines best course of action to achieve desired results

  • Applies technical and line knowledge to plan/design and lead projects that will enable achievement of goals either within Business Enabling Services, RMP or other key functions within Business Operations COE or Global Product Development

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with attention to details.

  • Leverages advanced technical and business knowledge of systems and processes in taking appropriate risks to advance innovative processes and methodologies

  • Proven ability to negotiate, influence and problem solve.

  • Due to comprehensive breadth of knowledge and prior work experience, has high level awareness of own limits
