Pfizer Senior Scientist, Protein Engineering in South San Francisco, California

The Protein Engineering Department is seeking an outstanding Senior Scientist to lead antibody discovery, engineering and technology development projects. They will be responsible for collaborating with individuals in both protein engineering and biology to develop the next generation of antibody based cancer therapeutics. They will have access to state of the art antibody generation technologies and will be expected to continue our tradition of developing world class methods and technologies that enhance our therapeutic antibody discovery efforts.

The primary responsibilities include obtaining in-depth knowledge of the therapeutic targets of interest and using this information to help design novel therapeutics with the potential to improve the lives of cancer patients. This position requires the candidate to perform and manage antibody generation campaigns and when necessary technology development. This includes performing phage and yeast display selection campaigns, and protein expression and purification of both antigens and antibodies. They will need to work in close collaboration with biologists and understand the immunology and tumor biology associated with the therapeutic targets and how to best implement therapeutic antibody intervention. This knowledge is required to support the evaluation of these antibodies in a variety of in vitro and in vivo models and use these results to further engineer the antibodies to maximize their therapeutic potential.

Education and Experience

Ph.D. in Biological Science (Molecular Biology, Structural Biology, Protein Chemistry) or a related field (Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering)

Post-graduate experience in either an academic or industrial setting is preferred

Strong track record of scientific accomplishments demonstrated through publications in highly regarded journals and/or intellectual property generation

Ability to analyze and interpret the work of others and apply it to their own research appropriately

Track record demonstrating analytical skills, creativity and problem solving skills

Proactive and self-motivated individual with a strong commitment to performing quality research in a timely manner

Ability and desire to work effectively in a dynamic and collaborative environment which requires outstanding interpersonal skills, and both written and oral communication skills

Technical Skills Requirement

Technical expertise should include molecular biology and protein biochemistry, screening protein libraries, ELISA, biosensor, and/or other biochemical and cell based assays

Prior experience in working with antibody or alternative scaffold binding proteins is required

Previous experience with protein engineering technologies such as phage display and yeast display is preferred

Experience with the expression, purification and characterization of various proteins including antibodies in prokaryotic or eukaryotic systems is required

Previous experience with robotics and automated liquid handling is preferred

Ability and desire to efficiently learn new skills as needed is required
