Pfizer Senior Computational Biologist in Cambridge, Massachusetts

WHY PATIENTS NEED YOU

Pfizer's purpose is to deliver breakthroughs that change patients' lives. Research and Development is at the heart of fulfilling Pfizer's purpose as we work to translate advanced science and technologies into the therapies and vaccines that matter most. Whether you are in the discovery sciences, ensuring drug safety and efficacy or supporting clinical trials, you will apply cutting edge design and process development capabilities to accelerate and bring the best-in-class medicines to patients around the world.

POSITION SUMMARY

Genomic data is central to understanding disease processes, providing a molecular landscape of metabolic disease and generating therapeutic hypotheses. In the Integrative Biology group within Pfizer's Internal Medicine Research Unit (IMRU), we leverage our computational biology expertise to address key drug discovery questions on biological and disease mechanisms, biological rationale, target safety and patient stratification. We utilize single-cell transcriptomics/multiomics and other omic modalities (including bulk transcriptomics, spatial transcriptomics, single-cell perturbation, epigenetics, proteomics, metabolomics, and genetics) to deliver target insights and portfolio impact. We are seeking a Senior Computational Biologist who will do genomic experiments using our ever-expanding collection of internal and public omics to understand disease processes and inform target discovery and validation for cardiovascular and metabolic disease, working in close partnership with lab-based and computational biologists, human geneticists, machine learning scientists and statisticians. An ideal candidate should be: 1. proficient in the use state-of-the-art tools for genomic data analysis, integration and visualization, 2. have a solid understanding of the principles and assumptions underlying their analytical approaches and, most importantly, 3. be able to extract, understand, clearly articulate and contextualize the biological insights resulting from their analyses.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead internal and external efforts to understand the pathogenesis of cardiovascular and metabolic disease (obesity, heart failure, atherosclerosis and vascular biology, chronic kidney disease and others) at a cellular and tissue level.

  • Provide actionable biological insights and build scientific understanding of specific drug targets and biological pathways within the context of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases through the implementation and application of tools and methods to analyze omic/multi-omic data (including but not limited to scRNAseq, sc-multimomics, spatial transcriptomics, bulk RNAseq, epigenetics, and proteomics)

  • Develop and drive external collaborations that secure access to novel or proprietary data types and innovative computational methodologies to advance our ability to process and analyze novel biological data types and understand disease pathophysiology from large-scale molecular and phenotypic data.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Computational Biology, or related field required; 5+ years relevant experience applying quantitative approaches to generate and address biological questions, preferably in a pharmaceutical, biotech or comparable context;

  • 3+ year's experience in research of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases preferred, including but not limited to obesity, heart failure, atherosclerosis and vascular biology, chronic kidney disease.

  • Ability to effectively interface with non-computational biologists to communicate/discuss results, hypotheses, and follow-up experiments

  • Proficiency in R and/or Python is required. Experience with single-cell tools/libraries for data analysis and integration, such as Seurat, ScanPy, scvi-tools

  • Familiarity with high performance computing and cloud computing

  • Strong curiosity about human biology and disease pathology, and a passion using big data at the cellular level to improve it

PREFERRED QUALIIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience in design, analysis and interpretation of large-scale molecular datasets, especially RNAseq, single-cell RNAseq, PerturbSeq, and other NGS data-types.

  • Experience using application interfaces (APIs) for data extractions and transfers between applications is also a plus.

  • Experience with developing data visualization tools such as Shiny apps or integration of genomic data in data visualization platforms is a plus.
