Pfizer Shift Operations Lead in Grange Castle, Ireland

Job Purpose:

Lead the shift operations teams in Suite 1 & 2 to manufacture vaccines to the required safety, quality schedule and cost requirements to meet the business needs. Work with the rest of the Operating Unit leadership team to meet the OpU objectives.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for a safe work environment

  • Responsible for cGMP compliance

  • Oversee highly automated process manufacturing operations

  • Lead budget planning for production operations

  • Provide leadership to the Right First Time team.

  • Work with developmental scientists and engineers on equipment installations, validations, and preventative maintenance

  • Work in collaboration with colleagues for team development

  • Oversee and proactively address operation and employee relation issues

  • Responsible for role modeling supportive leadership style but expected to adapt leadership styles as appropriate to the situation.

  • Coordinate applicable batch disposition activities with quality.

  • Participate in cross-functional project teams as applicable

  • Provide input and work with the OpU leadership team to deliver the OpU objectives.

  • Responsible for integration of Vaccines workcentres

KPIs/ Deliverables for the Role:

  • Completion of required production to safety, quality, schedule, cycle time and cost targets.

  • Effective Leadership of a large team to meet the required business requirements.

Key Challenges for the Role (in no particular order):

  • Being an ambassador for IIF

  • Instilling Zero Defects mindset within organisation

  • Being audit ready at all times

  • Reducing deviations per batch through effective CAPAs

  • The vaccines process has a high degree of product critical manual manipulations so the opportunity for human performance to affect the process is high.

  • Budget responsibility for majority of Vaccines spend

  • Facilitating operational changes to enable increase in batch/week run rates

  • Development of workforce flexibility between Suite 1 & Suite 2.

  • Ensuring technician model in place to support future requirements

  • Ensuring technician experience level is appropriate across all shifts - future proof organisation against predicted turnover.

  • Developing and facilitating leadership forums for people leaders within Vaccines

  • Providing a bridge between the shift and days teams so that each team can work efficiently and effectively together.

  • Ensuring that Supervisors across all shifts work together and with the RFT to provide clear and consistent leadership messages to the technician team.

  • Visiting teams out of hours on regular basis to ensure F2F communications.

  • Providing guidance out of hours (nights / weekends) on key operational calls.

  • Awareness of the 13 serotypes and the individual manufacturing challenges that each one presents

  • Consolidate gains made and introduce the next steps for Lean Management Systems for Vaccines.

  • Development of the Shift Champions program to drive operations success (Cost, Quality & Supply)

  • Identifying ways in which 6 Sigma can be used to improve operations.

  • Leading Vaccines manufacturing to the next level of World Class Performance through IMEX

  • Sharing and learning best practice from other sites

  • Development of the Shift 'In Great Company' Culture so that it becomes a key differentiator for Grange Castle


  • Min qualification - BSc scientific or engineering discipline (or equivalent)

  • Third level Qualification in Science, Engineering or equivalent is preferred, though not essential.Exceptions may be considered where relevant skills/experience and correct attitude and behaviors exist (this may be supplemented by further education in parallel).

  • Extensive experience in Industry Biopharmaceutical/pharmaceutical environment

  • Specific knowledge of Vaccines manufacturing

  • Solid experience in a Supervision/management role for > 6 years - preference in manufacturing

  • Good knowledge of Lean and 6Sigma tools

  • Leadership roles in Audit F2F with HPRA and FDA.

  • Specific experience in Change management and supporting colleagues through change
