Pfizer Process Safety Management Specialist in Kalamazoo, Michigan

ROLE SUMMARY

Knowledge and/or experience with chemical reaction hazards data, emergency relief systems design, and practical experience in hazardous analysis methodologies. Experience with chemical release modeling software is also highly desirable.

A high degree of proficiency with common computer programs, such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel is required along with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The ability to solve complex technical problems and provide expert technical support is a must.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Job responsibilities includes the practical and effective interpretation, implementation and execution of both external (OSHA, EPA RMP) and internal Pfizer Guidelines related to Process Safety Management (PSM) that impact multiple areas and departments within the PGS Kalamazoo site.

  • Responsibilities include the interpretation and application of chemical reaction hazards data to full scale production processes as it pertains to assessing risk.

  • Working with key stakeholders evaluate the technical, safety and regulatory impact of proposed equipment and process changes as it applies to PSM and provide leadership in risk-based decision making.

  • Responsible for leading comprehensive Process Hazard Analysis (PHAs) on both exiting processes/facilities and capital projects.

  • Participate in and/or lead incident investigations as needed/assigned.

  • Provide technical support/review for the evaluation of relief device design basis for the plant.

  • Act as the primary technical expert in modeling hazardous chemical releases using a sophisticated software application and the practical applications of these modeling results to PHAs, capital project reviews, emergency planning and compliance with Pfizer PSM guidelines. Responsibilities will also include, as needed, the development and delivery of PSM related training materials to enhance the understanding and effectiveness of the program.

  • Represent EHS on PSM issues with other plant stakeholders and coordinate PSM initiatives with other Pfizer operational and support areas (i.e. - Engineering CPA process, Mechanical Integrity program, Emergency Response)

  • Represent EHS on applicable committees (i.e., site drawing, Hazardous Area Classification Committee, P&ID, & code committees).

  • Independently or in conjunction with a Team, use recognized system analysis tools to identify compliance needs and recommend cost effective, value added, technically feasible, and business-oriented approaches to compliance with the Process Safety Management standard that is also protective of personnel and company property.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Safety or closely related discipline required.

  • Minimum 2-5 years of relevant professional experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience facilitating PHA's and LOPA's

  • PHA facilitator certification

  • Practical experience in Manufacturing or Engineering is not required but is highly desirable.

  • Experience with chemical release modeling software is also highly desirable.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires:

  • Basic physical requirements such as standing, walking (indoors and outdoors), and stairway access

  • Exposure to temperature extremes indoors and outdoors

  • Ability to wear PPE

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

Typical job responsibilities are M-F during day shift working hours, while intermittent off-shift coverage is expected. This position could require frequent time in the manufacturing areas around production equipment and may also require weekend or off-shift work to support project demands and timelines. Travel is not expected but may be required periodically.
