Pfizer Sr Project Manager, Device/Drug Combination Products in Lake Forest, Illinois


The Senior Project Manager in the Innovative Drug Delivery Platform will be responsible for leading complex combination product projects implementing innovative drug delivery projects across the Pfizer Essential Health business.

The Project Manager (PM) provides comprehensive project management and operational excellence for the execution and delivery of assets/projects from early development through lifecycle management (LCM). The PM serves as an operational leader, ensuring all cross functional deliverables are achieved on or ahead of schedule, within budget target, and with quality that meets or exceeds business needs. The incumbent will work closely with Clinical, Medical, Regulatory, Pharm Sci, and Partner Line representatives to develop and operationalize the asset/project strategy to ensure timely, quality delivery. The PM uses leadership and interpersonal skills to motivate and influence team members to high team performance and individual achievement. The PM's responsibilities encompass strategic problem-solving, project planning, compliance, program execution and delivery, team effectiveness, risk management, and communication management. The PM needs to have a comprehensive understanding of drug development as well as the PEH governance processes, strategic and tactical planning, and the foundational tools that support planning, communication, and continuous improvements in the area of operational delivery.


Project Execution and Delivery

  • Ensures the program delivers on time, within scope, and on budget by leading the development and coordination of program level goals as the Asset Team Leader (ATL) in partnership with the ATL.

  • Closely monitors activities across all line functions involved in the program to ensure achievement of key decision points and milestones according to time, cost, and quality parameters of the endorsed plan.

  • As ATL, or in partnership with the ATL, Finance Lead, and Partner Line representatives, accountable for developing and maintaining an integrated program level budget and accurate updated annual forecasts.

  • Reviews and/or approves operational activities and costs; monitors and manages program activities against the approved budget; leads the team to manage exposures through internal tradeoffs or seek approval through appropriate processes for additional budget as necessary.

  • Drives cross-functional processes and accountabilities to ensure efficient delivery of projects.

  • Negotiates the allocation of Partner Line resources to support the endorsed strategy and development plan.

  • Leads and facilitates the identification of operation and project/program issues and risks and drives resolution through a matrix environment, effectively documenting decisions/rationale.

  • Provides assessment of timing of investment triggers and go/no go decision points.

  • Drives team assessment of timing of investment triggers and go/no go decision points and helps prepare for governance presentations.

  • Facilitates team to appropriate discussions leading to effective decision-making.

Risk Analysis and Management

  • Leads the team in the preparation, implementation, maintenance, communication, and management of integrated risk management plans, including risk assessment and risk mitigation strategies.

  • Proactively identifies operational and program issues, facilitates development of team recommendations and action options, and ensures appropriate and rapid escalation to senior leadership and partner lines in time to mitigate risk, if possible.

  • Partners with team members and line function leadership to identify options to de-risk project plans and capitalize on opportunities.

  • Leads or facilitates team discussion and documentation of alternative development options, including pros, cons, and risks.

Strategy Thinking and Problem Solving

  • Leads development of integrated plans (e.g., Asset Plans, Integrated Development and Commercialization Plans) and ensures alignment with overall Portfolio Segment Team (PST) strategy.

  • Leads or offers leadership in asset-level planning, including development and assessment of scenarios and options, robust decision criteria, risk management, and internal/external communication and stakeholder management strategies.

  • Drives and facilitates decision point planning and the associated deliverables across all functions of the team and contributes to the strategic planning process for the project.

  • Designs, recommends, and implements new processes, approaches, or tools to manage the program or team.

  • Provides timeline and budget inputs for asset valuation and prioritization process.

Planning and Organization

  • Drives creation/maintenance of project plans, recognizing and driving delivery of key interdependencies across functional lines.

  • Leads development of the program critical path, decision criteria, and milestones/stage gates. Ensures all lines understand the strategy, key milestones and interdependencies.

  • Leads the oversight of the program level plan (schedule) in collaboration with the Project Planner and proactively identifies and manages opportunities to optimize delivery of the asset-level plan within budget.

  • Partners with the Project Planner to ensure that project schedule, resource management, and project controls are established and maintained.

Communication Skills

  • Responsible for the development and management of the communication plan for the program, including stakeholder management plan.

  • Ensures effective, accurate, and timely communication of program information to meet the needs of the asset team and stakeholders

  • Leads or participates in representing the asset team in governance presentations, Portfolio/Project reviews, stakeholder discussions, and other venues.

  • Provides complete, accurate and timely timeline, budget and resource information in appropriate Pfizer systems to enable effective portfolio management, portfolio reporting, and decision making.

  • Drives development of project level goals that contribute to the overall goals of the business and monitors progress against these goals, working in close association with the Portfolio Directors to ensure alignment. Provides project information necessary to support portfolio-level decision making and prioritization.

  • Conducts lessons learned and after action reviews.

Ability to Influence and Motivate

  • Utilizes negotiation, facilitation, meeting management, and conflict resolution skills to enhance cross- functional team performance.

  • Understands and communicates team roles/responsibilities; helps new team members get up to speed on the project, and ensures all team members have access to project information necessary to be successful.

  • Identifies team performance issues and partners with team leadership to recommend and develop appropriate actions.

  • Ensures cross-functional process efficiencies are identified and maximized in accordance with team project goals.

  • Clarifies project deliverables/workload to enable partner lines to assess resource needs, raise gaps, and partner with team leadership to resolve

Additional Responsibilities

In some instances a PM may provide leadership in the following areas:

  • Leads the operations for alliance projects including contributing roles on alliance sub-committees and steering committees.

  • Plays a leadership role in partnering with Finance and with PDA on asset valuation assessments.

  • Serves as Business Development Team Lead for assessments of new business development/partnerships.

  • Leads cross-functional teams for implementation of Business Development activities

  • Supports R&D Governance bodies (e.g. Technical Review Committee)

  • Provides comprehensive project management for regulatory submission activities of significant scope, including scenario analyses, endgame planning, integrated MS project plans, etc.

  • Leads logistic planning and provides project management support for advisory committee


Training & education requirement :

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the disciplines related to drug development or business required, engineering preferred. Advanced degree (PhD, PharmD, MBA) desirable.

  • Mastery of project management skills and product development.

  • Senior managers are preferred to have 7 or more years of relevant experience

  • Professional PM Certification (Project Management Professional [PMP] or equivalent) desirable.

Prior experience preferred:

  • Experience in combination products

  • Strong track record of performance on cross-functional teams and results through effective implementation of project management methodology, tools, and techniques.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in drug development, medical, and/or commercial disciplines with proven performance in business performance and project delivery.

  • Strong leadership, negotiation, interpersonal, communication, and meeting facilitation skills.

  • Experience with stakeholder management, governance management, and communicating key messages to senior-level stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize project management tools and techniques (such as developing integrated project plans, critical path management, project change control, project risk management, and decision analysis).

  • Extensive hands-on experience using Microsoft Project or equivalent project planning system to create and manage project timelines (Planisware and Snapshot experience highly desirable).

  • Familiarity with clinical trial execution, working with contract research organizations, budget management, and related areas highly desirable.

  • Track record for delivery against challenging personal and team goals.

  • Knowledge of medical and commercial issues that drive late stage development and life cycle management is desired.

  • Proven ability to succeed in a fast-paced, challenging and complex matrix team environment.
