Strategy, Portfolio, competitive INtelligence and Enterprise operations (SPINE)

The SPINE Group is accountable for shaping Pfizer's R&D strategy, monitoring and enhancing the value of its pipeline and driving continuous improvement initiatives. At the Divisional and Corporate level, they ensure key R&D decisions are linked to overall strategic priorities, competitive context and financial considerations. The Director of WRD Strategy will be part of the strategy team within SPINE.

Role Description

The Director of WRD Strategy will work as part of a team of R&D strategy professionals who are responsible for building out and evolving the core global R&D strategy for Pfizer's Worldwide R&D organization, as well as play a key role in representing WRD in corporate strategic initiatives, such as integration planning. This role will entail working with multiple Pfizer stakeholders to develop and integrate strategic insights across WRD and the broader organization into decision making. Top performers will be given opportunities to present to senior leaders at the WRD and enterprise levels.


The ideal candidate for the Director, WRD Strategy role will:

  • Help identify and set annual strategic objectives and priorities for WRD

  • Drive efforts to build out and evolve the overall strategy and strategic frameworks for Worldwide R&D (WRD) in collaboration with key stakeholders across WRD and the broader organization

  • Address business challenges requested by Pfizer's executive leadership team (ELT) and WRD leadership team (WRD LT)

  • Identify and implement solutions to enhance R&D productivity across WRD

  • Lead select initiatives to optimize organizational structure and operating model

  • Lead or play key role in strategic and planning efforts for M&As

  • Support key corporate strategic initiatives that involve important R&D aspects/considerations

  • Play key role in crisp articulation of R&D accomplishments & strategy for Board & Pfizer Executive Leadership Team (ELT)

  • Collaborate with other groups in SPINE (Strategic Portfolio Management, Competitive Intelligence, Operations And Scientific Affairs), and within the greater Pfizer community including WRD Research Units (RUs) And Partner Lines (PLs), strategy & portfolio groups in WRD and Corporate/Business Units, Integration Management

  • Work closely with and for key stakeholders including the President of Worldwide R&D and multiple WRD and Pfizer Leadership Teams

  • While not directly leading team members, working with large matrixed teams and leading through influence to gain alignment and develop robust deliverables.


  • Motivated, bringing the initiative to take on and deliver against important tactical / operational tasks on a day-to-day basis

  • 5-7 years of experience from biopharma industry (including R&D experience), either at biopharma company and/or top-tier management consulting firm with pharma focus required

  • 4+ years of experience from top-tier management consulting firm or in-house strategy experience at biopharma company strongly preferred

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in drug discovery relevant topic - M.D., Pharm.D., or Ph.D. in Life Sciences a plus

  • Experience and familiarity with the Pfizer organization, particularly R&D/Business Units/Corporate Strategy a plus

  • MBA or hands on demonstrated experience in a variety of key business models and frameworks a plus

Skill Set

  • In-depth understanding of pharma R&D strategy, processes and operations, with proven track record of successful strategy development and implementation

  • Strategic thinker; strong analytical and problem solving skills and business acumen

  • Ability to lead complex matrixed teams and experience in working with/presenting to senior executives

  • Well organized, creative, independent, self-motivated individual with exceptional presentation, written, and oral communication skills

  • Ability to motivate others to maintain a high and consistent level of excellence in strategy development, project management and outcomes
