Materials Characterisation Team

Department Overview

The Material Characterisation Team is responsible for providing Pfizer's manufacturing sites with advanced material sciences support. Some of the projects supported by the team include; manufacturing troubleshooting investigations, raw material (active ingredient and excipients) characterisation to support new supplier evaluations and foreign particulate matter identification. The team provides information on the physical, chemical and physico-chemical properties of the materials and these can include the active ingredient, excipients, intermediates, blends and finished dosage forms. The data is subsequently shared with a customer in the form of a detailed report.

What can I achieve and what will I be responsible for whilst completing a placement at Pfizer?

You would be trained in the operation and data interpretation for a wide variety of different advanced analytical techniques. Comprehensive training will be provided for each method which will enable you to conduct experiments autonomously. You will work closely with the project leader to interpret the results and identify conclusions and respond to the customer needs. The techniques you may be trained on include particle size analysis, microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, surface area, thermal and spectroscopic methods.

You would be working in an exciting, fast-paced environment alongside highly driven and enthusiastic scientists. In addition to the training on different methods, you would also learn project management skills and be able to multi-task effectively. The undergraduate would also be expected to conduct a research project in an area defined by the team goals.

Other responsibilities include:

  • New technology evaluations.

  • Active participation in the site's STEM activities.

  • Active participation in the Undergraduates network.

  • Performing some laboratory duties.

When can I start?

Placements will start on 2nd September 2019 and will run for 12 months.

Good laboratory skills and appreciation for laboratory safety. Ability to independently design and carry out experiments.
